January 28th is World Geoffroy’s Cat Day!
World Geoffroy’s Cat Day celebrates this small, solitary, and mainly nocturnal wild cat, who is named after the 19th Century French naturalist, Geoffroy St. Hilaire. Geoffroy’s cats are on the IUCN Red list and listed as Least Concern (LC) due to their stable population. They are native to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Geoffroy’s cats are key in helping to control the small, wild animal populations in the parts of South America, where they are found. Although, Geoffroy’s cats help with population control in the areas they live, they do face their own risks. Motor vehicles, hunting, and climate change, like drought, are all threats to Geoffroy’s cats. The goal of World Geoffroy’s Cat Day is to highlight these beautiful, small cats by increasing awareness and knowledge of them. |
